Using gmail / sendgrid for email registration

I am working through the Auth examples and have trouble getting the email verification to set-up properly. Ideally, I would like to this to go via a mailserver sendgrid / mailchimp or via a gmail account. I have found wt_config.xml

but I am not sure how this feeds through. In any case I do not receive any emails. What else do I need to do to get the verification email to work?
Where/how can I change the registration email settings (or better, use an html template for it)?

I just used it to connect with strato.de and it works perfectly.
My guess is, that this would allow to send mail on a local Computer as well
