Hey,
Last time I checked, there were plans but no concrete implementations of this inside the WebSockets protocol. I would prefer to use this feature as it comes available in the protocol, rather than inventing something in JavaScript.
Are you aware of progress that was made in browser implementations ?

It seems Chrome 19 already supports compression.
