Is it possible to use a specific HTTP Status code as a result of an application logic error?

My Application is build by Widgets chained together (kind of wizard like).

In one Widget its requesting credentials for use by a upstream process.

When the user supplies wrong credentials i want my application to send the widget changes (informing the user about his misstake) with a 403 (unauthorized) status code.

Goal is to react on repeating 403 status codes with a fail2ban rule (from inside a forward proxy) to prevent bruteforce attacks.
