is it possible to configure the model or view so that the space between the elements or below the last element would be allowed as a drop target?

the drop target is always an element in the view. In the model, you can interpret this as where you want the element to go and moving all existing items down. This means you cannot drop something in the last place since the last element will always be moved down.

thanks for the answer. Does that mean that a drop action on an empty view is impossible? That is very strange.
